I've played all the Mario games, and 64 always left the biggest impression on me. To those saying that the sandbox games (64/Sunshine, parts of Galaxy) don't have any objective, that's the whole point of the various stars you're collecting. Each has an objective in order to get it. You explore to figure it out, you platform plenty to get to it or collect what you need, etc. And I appreciate that there's no time limit, so you can do it at your own pace. Unlike in the linear Mario games where you're at the behest of the clock at all times and must keep moving forward and you can't ever relax. Those games (2D Mario, 3D Land, 3D World, and parts of Galaxy 1/2) are amazing and fun and I appreciate the diverse levels and the way each new level throws new elements at you. However, I think they lack the replayability and depth of the sandbox games. Mario's movements are so fast and fluid and awesome that it's a shame when you don't really have the time (or space) to enjoy them fully. Also, the Galaxy games are kind of halfway between the two camps, imo. They don't have a time limit and some of the galaxies are bigger and allow you to explore a bit more. But they're also largely linear levels, and often times you couldn't go backwards once you'd been launched forward. So while I enjoy all the Mario games, I'll take the true sandbox style of 64/Sunshine over any of the others, and that's why I'm as hyped for Mario Odyssey as I've been for any Mario game since the launch of the original Galaxy.
