Or perhaps, just like the flying saucer, people see them because they think thats what a UFO looks like.
People see what they think they are going to see, it would be quite easy to mistake a plane at night for a 'black triangle' if you believed that black triangles existed.
Edit: How do you supercool a plasma? I thought they were, almost by definition, extremely hot.
