Yes, by techincal definition we are animals and we share a sense of survival. But we've also evolved to have sympathy and a sense of humanity greater than any other animal on the planet. (clearly there are those that push to disprove that statement)
There is no reason we cannot help the refugees (any refugees) as well as guard against our own civility and safety. But to ignore it all and watch hundreds, thousands or millions die is a crime against humanity and if you're religious, against all religious teaching (regardless of the brand).
