I tend to buy consoles mid to late in their life, so there's usually a decent amount of choices available by that point.
I don't go out of my way to get special/limited editions. If there if one available that strikes my fancy at a good pice, I'll get it and that will be my console. My WW WiiU was a Black Friday deal, and while I appreciate the ever so slightly nicer gamepad, I would've just gotten the regular one if it was cheaper.
I'm a bit more tickled by color and design when it comes to handhelds. I'll go for the color I like most out of the ones available for sure and I'm admittedly tickled by the myrad of 3DS editions. I really like the Animal Crossing HHD new 3DSXL, but it just doesn't make sense to buy a new 3DS with my old still in good condition and the Switch around the corner.....
