I will be that guy. You're wrong. Still one of ths most detailed and most atmospheric games ever made. Music is still amazing. Fans still discover new things. A good game is a good game and Shenmue is a good game. |
I'd say you are both kind of right. Now, I'm a big fan of Shenmue, but while I don't think it was outdated two years after it came out, I think gamers being introduced to the series now won't really get it. By today's standards, very little about it is special. A lot of what made Shenmue what it was was it's technical feats, scale, and detail. Stuff that just isn't that impressive anymore. The game also has a fairly slow start, a heavy focus on QTE sequences, and poor voice acting. I DO think Shenmue 2 holds up a lot better, and handles pacing a lot better. The multitudes of jobs and mini games are also nice. That crate moving mini game with Delin was WAY more fun than it had any right to be.
I think, if the games do get re-released, reviews will be average at best and we will have many gamers new to the series calling it crap, because they don't have our nostalgia goggles.
That being said...I do think Shenmue was great game for 2000. Heck, I think it was still a great game in 2005. It does have loads of detail for a game of it's age, it does have a great atmosphere, an amazing soundtrack, an even a pretty good story in my opinion. But a lot of 3D games from that era haven't aged well, and I think Shenmue is one of them. I just hope Shenmue 3 isn't too attached to its predecessors, and is willing to get with the times.
