People always talk about the USA as being mega dangerous, but the majority of people go day to day for their WHOLE lives without being attacked or involved in crime. Its hot spots where the big crime numbers pop up. like, yeah, if you live in Detroit or something it's probably highly likely if you walk outside for a while that you'll get mugged.
but the majority of places? not at all. Part of it is luck, sure. In the end its a no brainer though- if someone is worried about crime don't live in a seedy cheap end of a city (or certain cities at all).
I think it is SOMEWHAT helpful to have a lot of cops around as people do seem somewhat nervous about violating others.
I can't imagine what it's like to live in some parts of Asia or Africa though, there are certain places in the world where the murder and assault rate (by both civilians and government) is insanely high D:
