If Vita was successful in Japan, there would at least be a glimmer of hope that there might be another Sony handheld. The lack of Monster Hunter stifled its growth tremendously.

It was a heavy hit, yes. I do not believe it would've made a significant difference in the end though. The dedicated handheld market has massively shrunk in the recent years. And the 3ds simply had a much, much, much more appealing games on it. And as it stands there are very few people that would've bought a vita as a second console along with their 3ds.
