I've started reading Shut Hell and it's really good.  It's very intense.  I almost skipped over it, thinking it was going to be something more cliched, but I'm really glad I gave it a chance.  Mature content, especially violence.

There are two main characters.

The first is a young woman who was a simple foot soldier for the Tangut army.  She was clumsy and weak but her squad looked out for her and gave her the nickname of 'Little Sparrow".  However, they were dust before the might of the horde that swept down upon them.  Gengis Khan's forces were striking down into China and burning everything in their path.  Helpless to stop the death around her, the Little Sparrow would transform into a spirit of vengence the Mongols called Shut Hell, the Evil One.

The other is a young boy, brother to the Tiger, the clan war leader Shut Hell seeks to kill.  Unlike his brother, however, the boy hates violence and loves written knowledge.  In order to protect a set of sacred text from the Mongols, who have sworn to burn all Tangut writings, the boy runs away, even though he knows he will be hunted.

This makes him perfect bait for Shut Hell to use against her enemies.
