Better for Nintendo to remain self-sufficient than to adopt a design philosophy that would throw it into a self-destructive arms race with Sony and Microsoft, which have the deep pockets to subsidize expensive hardware and, frankly, need third parties much more desperately than Nintendo.

Except Sony and Nintendo aren't subsidizing hardware at all, Sony will not even include BDXL/UHD drive over marginal $ difference.
And reality is Nintendo is not just deciding to not compete directly, they don't even try to push what is capable WITHIN THEIR NIC.HE
14nm production is NOT cutting edge when 10nm is now being introduced, it allows 30% performance boost for same power, but Nintendo can't do it.
Nintendo can't try to leverage NVIDIA's latest products IN SAME TABLET NICHE, it relies on last-gen tablet tech on last-gen fab tech.
To be clear, using the modern tech there would not magically put it in par with Sony/MS, but would easily allow it to come half way.
That might even allow porting from those platforms, even if with reduced performance.
But Nintendo will not do so despite  EVERY other consumer electronic firm (e.g. smartphones) being able to get on board an launch platforms on recent tech.

That's fine, but I'm saying Nintendo doesn't need the ports to be successful. I believe it should invest in cheap hardware because that will allow it to sell Switch at a low cost and then make a lot of money on software and accessories.

So, sure, it could inch closer to Sony/MS, but what is the utility in doing so? Having a watered-down port of Assassin's Creed or Mass Effect isn't going to change the future of Switch. And Nintendo and Retro and Monolith Soft and Monster Games don't need the extra horsepower.

I mean, Nintendo went half-way with WiiU, getting close enough to the competition to get Black Flag, Black Ops II, etc. It was a waste. Fans who wanted those games already had places to play superior versions of them, and Nintendo fans weren't interested.
