| Dark_Feanor said: Well, I have to agrre that this was one of the best retcon they could possible have. HOWEVER most of every other plot points that shoud have tied Jyn´s father work with the rebelion are very confusing. 1- They need to go to another planet, "the Central Imperial Achives", which alone could be a target for the Rebelion for its strategic value or the Senate for investigation. It would be, but it seems to be very well protected (tactically the Rebels lose big-time), but I'm also not sure if anyone, Rebel or Senate even know about the facility in the first place. Then, the Senate barely have any power because of the Emperor and is abolished right at the start of IV, so also the end of RO. 2- The name of the project is her nickname but her father didn´t know she would be involved in the mission. I assume he expected Saw Guerrera to lead the atack and he would know the file name. Well they started the Death Star project before Erso defected, and so before he and his family lived as farmers and knew Guerrera, so I would guess the project code-name already existed before Erso decided to sabotage everything. 3- Q:Why the Rebelion would want Erso dead as a primary object? A: To create a false tension and a character arch in the movie. The Rebel general giving that order doesn't know that Erso sabotaged the Death Star though, to him he's nothing other than a dangerous, high-level Imperial scientist. 4- How can the rebelion deploy a fleet so fast without any preparation? How fast can one come and go in this galaxy? They always have a full fleet around somewhere, it's in V and VI also. 5- The fleet was in contact with the rebels base. Why couldn´t they sent the plans imidiatly? Filesize. Now the bad retcons 1 - The Rebelion lost the whole fleet in the battle and this is forgotten. Are Bothans more important than hundreds of humans and Mon Calamaris? From RotJ perspective, that was years ago, the Bothans' sacrifice however just happened. And since IV happened minutes after RO, they didn't have time to grieve. (Trying an in-universe explanation, the real explanation is obviously because they made IV 40 years ago) 2- Leia was in the battle and there is no way she could have fulled Vader she was in a "diplomatic mission". It was a weak excuse by Leia because what else could she come up with in such a short time except for 'nope, wasn't us, honest'. Vader wasn't fooled. He says right away "... then where's the ambassador?". Vader is sarcastic throughout much of the series. 3- Why would Tarkin trust the Death Star safety? It is not his pet project any more and he knew the plans were compromised. Tarkin doesn't know as far as I'm aware or doesn't believe it, will need to see the movie again. Krennic knew and Vader maybe, but he just doesn't care. Maybe Vader wants the Death Star to fail because then the Emperor keeps him around longer, he's also stating that "The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force" in IV so he's obviously not impressed. Things missing 1- The reason Darth Vader is under Tarkin. Vader doesn't answer to Tarkin though, not even in IV. 2- The Senate unrest and disband. Wasn't needed to be seen in RO, but it would be nice if we'd get some kind of hint either Tarkin or Vader actually know what the Emperor is up to. 3- Reasons for punishing Alderan that severe. Alderaan was an example set just to coerce Leia into giving up the location of the Rebels on Yavin, and at the same time conveniently a test for the Death Star's full powered shot. He says to Leia in IV; "You prefer another target? A military target? Then name the system." Tarkin is just that evil. |
Interesting points, and some pretty good ones as well. I'll try to come up with some in-universe explanation, I think most could be reasonably explained away.
And for the record, the Death Star's weak-spot plothole I think is indeed brilliantly fixed by Rogue One.
