There were seven arrested in total after police stopped what police chief commissioner Graham Ashton said was a potential multi-mode attack at Federation Square, Flinders Street Station and St Paul's Cathedral.

On 23 December 2016 seven people were arrested in Melbourne for plotting an attack on Christmas Day. Properties were raided at CampbellfieldDallas, VictoriaFlemingtonGladstone Park, and Meadow Heights.[94][95]The attack was aimed at Melbourne's Flinders Street StationFederation Square and St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne. An explosive device and other weapons were to be used.

Three men have been charged and remanded in custody.  A 22-year-old man will face an out-of-sessions hearing later on Friday.
