One of the things that makes me most wonder about whether Nintendo has any idea what they are doing is when one of their franchises or pieces of hardware catch fire and then whatever it is just immediately gets sold out and is not seen on store shelves until the popularity is over. This exact same thing happened with the Wii and it was impossible to find any in stores for the first 2 years.
Nintendo should have started manufacturing New 3DS consoles like mad as soon as they saw Pokémon GO take off back in July. They are in all of this financial woe thanks to the Wii U and then they were given this amazing one-two punch with Pokémon GO going viral and Pokémon Sun/Moon being ready in the barrel. Any half-baked analyst should have been able to advise Nintendo back in July that the 3DS would have a crazy spike this Christmas season. Instead Nintendo decides to just act as though Pokémon GO doesn't exist and basically bury their golden goose.
Nintendo is a brilliant game maker and they have incredibly powerful and iconic IP but they are complete duds when it comes to marketing and business. I just really hope that the Switch is able to sell itself because I certainly wouldn't count on Nintendo making it happen...
