A lot of people think there is a natural creepiness about clowns; a lot of this comes because clowns are strangers (who are often vagrants) who paint their emotions onto their face and react to what is happening around them in a very counter intuitive way. It is a lot like a guy I worked with who was from Africa (I can't remember the country), and where he is from it is expected for you to smile all the time; the creepiest feeling I have ever had in my life was when he told me his wife had a miscarriage while he had the biggest smile on his face.
