7th generation reviews were skewed, and I am not saying that to defend FF15, but it was noticeable to me that games were getting free passes left and right, including FF13, you said so yourself.
A lot of people say reviewers have gotten "tough". They are not actually tough, they are "tougher" than they were last gen and that's it.
As for Final Fantasy, it's definitely not what it used to be. I don't follow the insides of SE closely but it seems me that lousy choices led to the messes that were FF14 & FFversus. FF14 is an excellent game now but why wasn't it from the start? Releasing a broken game then fixing it by changing directors is worse than building a project from scartch with a clear vision. It's almost unquestionable that Nomura's Versus baggage weighed down Tabata's vision for FF15. Tabata's not even done working on his game yet, the nature of these promised free future updates is unprecedented in this industry. Admirable efforts, but it also supports my point, making broken things then fixing them is a time sink.
I guess what I want to say is that I can't wait for Final Fantasy 16, a fresh start with a clear vision, a game free from the 7th generation baggage that weighed down all of the "HD" Final Fantasy games. FF13 is history thankfully, FF14 is a money maker now, and FF15 made it to the other side in a good shape, finally.
That fresh start is definitely not FF7r though..
