True. But it's when somebody doesn't own or like a particular thing and they pretend to know more things than people who actually do own or like said things that is the problem. Mostly if the reason somebody dislikes something is because "it's not from my preferred brand".

I guess my biggest pet peeve is when somebody hates something until it's in their favor. Then, it's a big deal. Hypocrisy, in other words.

Im my experience on forums, a large portion of the "you clearly don't have x console or y game" is based purely on assumption, just because a particular person openly favors a particular game, franchise or manufacturer, even if they directly admit to doing so, does not mean that making assumptions on what they do or do not own validates or invalidates their points.

And for situations where nobody can actually own a particular product, because it isn't actually out, nobody really has the higher ground on the topic to begin with, since everyone is judging based on what they have seen or heard alone.

And actually, even if someone openly says they do not have a particular console or game, and openly states that they think a particular game or console sucks, doesn't the fact that they don't own it actually bolster their opinion rather than invalidate it? seeing as them not owning it supplorts the opinion they are giving, rather than decrediting it?

I get where you're coming from on people trolling and being negative just to tick other users off, but pretty much everyone on every forum ever is guilty of doing so to another user at least once in their posting lifetimes, it's a common thing, thankfully frequent abusers of such tactics are easy to spot, the only real issue is dealing with them, especially if they're long standing or well liked users as it upsets the apple cart and incites other users to push back against the moderation team because a particular user who was clearly ticking off a particular fanbase had the blessing of others who may share the same sentiment but skirt around the idea of openly stating it themselves.

In many cases the moderation team themselves can find themselves dealing our harsher punishments and lighter punishments based on which group is doing what, too, because by our very nature it's near impossible to be entirely unbiased.

It's all smoke and mirrors, frankly. I don't think asking users to keep out of threads or forum sections for consoles or games they have no interest in, will do anything other than push the trolling to be even more devious, underhanded and personal.

The bolded really stands out to me. That's something I haven't taken into account. You're right. Owning something does kind of make you defensive of it.

I guess there's a balance.

*Only meant to bold that particular paragraph. Darn cellphone*
