I see it as a desire to have the world fit your personal preferences. I remember as a kid how classmates would try to convince others to buy Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis because it was what they liked. This desire would take negative form when bashing one platform to lift the preferred one. It could also be lack of awareness that other people like things for different reasons. In summation, malice, insecurity, or ignorance would be my guesses.
