Hmm, liberals support expensive subsidies so that puts them economically on the left and they are socially progressive too which also puts them socially on the left so how on earth are they not leftists ? 

Liberals are centrists, they still support the continuation of capitalism so they are not leftists. Leftists are socialists/communists/anarchsits who want to abolish capitalism.
