That's part of my point though. It's difficult to be a good defense against points when you start on defense with such bad field position. Let's take the Oakland game, starting with Buffalo up 24-16 late in the 3rd quarter. - Buffalo goes three and out, then does a bad punt. Oakland takes the field on Buffalo's 38, then scores. 24-23 - Buffalo goes three and out again, and follows with another weak punt. Oakland takes the field on their 41, then scores. 30-24 Oakland. - Buffalo goes three and out AGAIN, and punts it to the Oakland 25. The Buffalo defense stops them and Oakland punts. - Buffalo throws an interception on the very next play. Oakland takes the field on the Buffalo 16. They eventually score. 38-24 Oakland. - Buffalo offense takes the field. They have a good drive, then they fumble it in Oakland's end. Oakland Offense takes the field on their own 23. - Oakland runs the clock down, then punts with 18 seconds left. The numbers are stacked against you when you start with the ball in your own end. The New England defense, one of the best this year, had a great game last week, allowing only 10 points. But they never started in their own end. Most of the LA drives started on their own 25 yard line, or worse. The Bills have an above average defense. If it's not top 10, it's close. They have the league's best rushing game. They have the league's worst passing game. That combined with lower tier punting are the areas that they need to work on first. As for the Chiefs, they're a solid team all around. They have a good defense, but on offense they have the best Tight End in the league this year and a solid Wide Receiver who is also the league's best punt returner. |
Right but what it means is that the Chiefs defense often make important stops despite being one of the bottom teams in allowed yardage. They might let u run up the field 90 yards everytime, but then they magically get good in the redzone and make you field goal. Bills on the other hand don't stop them in the Redzone. (I assume)
If the opposing team gets good field position everytime, then the Bills will allow less yards and look good in that stat but allow more points and look bad in that stat. In the end Points> Yards to win games, so the defenses of the Bills or Chiefs may or may not be underestimated.
