First of all, we only know about Japanese sales, which saw a massive drop. We know nothing about worldwide sales. This is the first FF game with a simultaneous worldwide release, so "best selling launch week" means nothing and is marketing trickery. Second of all, digital sales have grown tremendously since 2009. You couldn't even download FF XIII online when it first launched. So highest launch-day digital sales is another meaningless achievement. It means nothing, it's empty marketing.
We only know that the sales in Japan are poor and that it had an initial worldwide shipment of 5 million. That doesn't mean it's going to sell 5 million copies in a week. Success isn't guaranteed in the West like some people think it is.
Yokai Watch, Monster Hunter and Pokémon saw great success on the 3DS, so don't give me crap about Nintendo needing to support developers with "competent home console hardware". Square-Enix needs to follow the fans and you yourself just admitted they migrated to portable consoles.
Mainline Final Fantasy games would have sold well on the 3DS and they would have been able to release 3 or more mainline entries if they wanted to. We have Yokai Watch 1-3, Pokémon X/Y, Pokémon ORAS and Pokémon Sun/Moon and god knows how many Monster Hunter games on the 3DS. All sold incredibly well. And the development budgets of all these games combined probably doesn't match the development budget of FF XV alone. Wake up to the harsh reality.
