You talk about spin? Japan has been known to be migrating its gaming habit to portable devices. All the titles you mentioned are in accordance to that.

Splatoon made a splash. Sure.

So did Final Fantasy XV, breaking records for digital download in Japan. See whatever you want. The official statement by Square-Enix is that it is the fastest selling title in the franchise so far, aligned or not.

You do realize I'm suggesting Square should have supported the 3DS with mainline entries into the FF franchise, right? Sqaure can't have missed the migrating gaming habits by Japanese towards portable devices. That means they're either too stubborn or too much in love with Sony to make the only correct decision.

The official statement by Square-Enix means nothing when you take into account reality.

Square/Enix supported the 3DS with Bravely Default and DQ. Going from big elaborate productions to dinky DS graphics with mainline FF would have been a bigger shock to gamers' systems than Nintendo fans freaking out over toon Link in Wind Waker. Square/Enix sticking with Sony hasn't been out of fanboyism, but to keep the FF series cutting edge on the AAA stage.
