I think you're puting yourself in a scenario that fits your narrative, but you can't really define these conventions in themselves. Remember, there are games that adscribe to these conventions you speak of and have said "flaws" you point out that got critical acclaim. INSIDE is extremely linear, but got massive acclaim. Gone Home had the same way of storytelling than XIII (minus cutscenes) and it got universal praise. Metal Gear Solid V has a very unlikeable cast and it is considered a masterpiece.
There's no factual evidence as to why XIII would have to get bashed, since the conventions you speak of doesn't necessarily have to support your view. You can only use an hypothetical scenario, which has the same validity than me saying these new conventions actually would make XIII be more praised. The ultimate answer is we don't know until, if it ever happens, a port of FF XIII comes to light and critics re-review it.
