FF XV is AMAZING - I loved it. (about a 40 hour play through for me)

You don't have to put in tons of hours unless, like many RPG gamers, you are a completionist.   One optional monster, in particular can take over an hour to kill.   Someone here beat the game in 23 hours.  I'm probably trending towards 60.  

It took me 3 hours to kill that one because I didn't camp and buff myself at all prior to, and I was severely under-leveled.

What level were you... if you don't mind me asking?
