SPOILER BELOW
Well Light depends on his own brain skills the whole time. Just like One Piece, there is not random huge transformation except for when he actually decided to start killing. After that it's him using his smarts in different situations to escape capture. I don't know if you've seen the whole thing, but in the end this actually leads to his demise. I also thinks Light doesn't follow the standard anime "bad boy" hero. For one thing, he's not actually the hero. I don't see many anime's who have a sociopath as there protagonist main character. Most of the time people are rooting for L, or for Light to die(Not meXD). I'd go as far to say Light IS the bad guy in the show, not your typical hero when he is considered a mass murderer.
I also think shows that run as long as One Piece (Naruto/Bleach/DBZ) as good as they are, come across flawed all together. Don't get me wrong, I really like Naruto and so on, but filler seasons and repetitive story lines will kill me sometimes.

Yeah, I saw the whole thing (and read the manga), and like I said Death Note isn't too bad about sticking to a formula.  Light is still the protagonist, despite his dark nature.  The protagonist doesn't have to be on the SIDE of good, just has to be the main focus of the story.  And yeah, One Piece's only major flaw is a cyclical story line, though that cycle can be adjusted quite a bit (as happened in the last arc).

Ok... but you said "bad boy" hero.  You also said DEM....so were you talking about Death Note or animes in general?

And another reason I find Death Note intriguing is the actual confrontations.  It's more like a drama than typical action anime's that are so popular.
