Imagine this. You're sitting in the movie theatre. I'm sitting next to you. I'm kicking your head every five seconds. You try to complain but then I just say: "Who cares? Just enjoy the movie!"
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
