Because one of them is shooting it and the other one is talking about them.

Oh and seriously Trump said he could go out on 5th avenue and shoot someone and people wouldn't care. Doesn't sound to me like he is all that discerning about the target.

That statement of Trump reads more like "smear campaigns won't work against me", at least that makes more sense than taking it literally. And that was the biggest failure of the Clinton campaign which insisted on using conventional tactics on an unconventional candidate who had repeatedly come out stronger after others tried to smear him. A smart person would have adjusted the campaign against Trump, but that's the story of this election: Stupid people doing very stupid things because they've convinced themselves hard that they are so much smarter than people who support Trump.

The conventional politician resorts to denial and lies when faced with a smear campaign, but Trump flipped the entire premise and embraced the bad guy image (hence the quote about going out on the streets and shooting someone), so what usually weakens a politician made him stronger.

Is that why your avy is laughing hysterically?

Hm... maybe.

Hillary messed up on two fronts.  One, they didn't have as much oppostional research done as I thought they would.  There are plenty of Trump clips and sound bites out there that would have swayed the election in her favor, yet no one really put them out, save the Billy Bush clip.  And even when that came out, she didn't hit him hardly at all about it.  I guess she just thought the clip would talk for itself.

And second, and much more importantly, her own corruption bit her in the ass.  It's the reason a nobody like Bernie Sanders gave her such a run in the primaries, when, on name alone, she should have wrapped it up quickly.  And only the chance that there were scandalous emails in the Weiner case was just the last straw for many people.  Sure, it turned out to be nothing, but the fact that people could see the real possibility that it was true was enough.

In short, she was a horrible candidate.  The fact the Reps put forth their worst is the only reason there was even a battle.  Had it been Rubio or Cruz, they would have trounced her, not just finish so close.  And if the Dems had actually run Biden, I have no doubt he would have wiped the floor with Trump.
