Lol, the man was NOT a good leader! People don't float on inner tubes across an ocean with their children to escape a good leader. They don't erupt in celebration when he dies if he was a "good leader".
I always find it amusing that people choose to ignore the overwhelming opinion of those who have escaped Cuba, as if we somehow have more valid information than they and their still-trapped-in-Cuba family members have in regards to the experience of living under Castro's regime.
The simple truth is if we were holding this conversation in Castro's Cuba many of us would likely find ourselves tailed, harassed, and fired from our jobs, and imprisonment would follow if we did not stop discussing and criticizing the regime. That, in my mind, does not a good leader make.
Really, there's a very easy test to see if a leader is a real son of a bitch or not: Did they win 98%+ of the "vote"? If yes (as recently as 2008 Raul won over 99%), then the regime and its leaders are a bunch of oppressive assholes.
