It all depends, Bush looked certain to be defeated in 2004 but he got 12 million more votes from the last election.
I doubt that is the case but I think the next election will see both candidates at 65 million plus votes.
Trump did lose the popular votes but he also got the most votes ever for a GOPer.
It all depends, If the democrats run the score in California it does not matter in the big picture.
