Even Xbox One doesn't get the best results at 1080p.

I exoect them to target 720p internally with all their games and then the Dock will basically have an upscaled built in to upscale the games to 1080p/4k for TVs. 

It would be extremely stupid if Nintendo tries to target 900p/1080p games natively. With the power the switch has it would be as u said just better all round to go for 720p. They could hit that rez at some pretty decent framerates and lots of IQ gloss.
