Hard to single it down but Artstyle and story are the main things. Thats what really separates it from other RPGs.
Unfortunately the quality of story telling really hasn't moved with the times. Where as before I would get chills, nowadays I wince. And this even goes back to some of the classic well loved titles, although the lack of voice acting gave them room to charm. This sounds terribly insulting but for the modern games which require voice acting they really ought to get some quality western writers on board.
