BC is not the only variable at play here. Correct me if I'm wrong but removing PS2 BC on the PS3 meant the PS3's price could be slashed which at one point in time cost $600.

No, I think it just recently celebrated its one-year anniversary so X1 BC started November 2015:

No but one must ask how much bigger the gap might have been if not for Microsoft working hard to turn their fortunes around: lowering prices, offering more appealing bundles, being less restrictive with their modding policy, 4K Bluray player support, and I think even outspending Sony at times in marketing their console.

Not always: just because something sells really well doesn't always mean it's what gamers want: No Man's Sky sold very well especially considering it was made by a tiny team of 15 or so people and yet its legacy is not currently a positive one.

GTA 5 sold incredibly well and yet I find the game to be terrible.

Giving credit is still positive press for XB1 (Microsoft would thank you for it, I'm sure) much like good word of mouth. I repeat once again that positively changing the image of XBox is a gain, not a loss.

Yes I'll correct you, the baseline PS3 was 500 at launch not 600.

Thank you. Am I also correct that cutting PS2 BC allowed for lowering PS3's price?

But sure enough from what we know it was the 600 that sold better.

When you're willing to spend 500 on a console, what's another 100 amirite?

You may skip the fact that PS3 dropping BC and selling better still because of price reduction isn't a proof that most don't care about BC, but how will you ignore that X1 after adding BC haven't seem a spike in sales to prove how useful it was seem? Even more when we had the first statistics showing how little the function was used.

Firstly, whether it was used or not isn't really the point: BC helps improve XB1's appeal and reputation. XB1, having shed its mandatory kinect crap and such is no longer the bane of the industry. Now it's the console that has BC and better mod support which distinguishes it from the PS4.

Secondly, what statistics are you referring to?
