I get you've never seen it happen with your own eyes but this doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I've never seen a murder with my own eyes but it doesn't mean they don't happen.

Going back to the image part, Microsoft has not shyed away from using X1's backwards compatibility as a selling point and rightfully so. PS4 can't play PS3 games last I checked but the XBox 1 can play a growing list of 360 games. This is opportunity for Microsoft: someone who owns 360 games and has not purchased an X1 would see another reason to invest in an X1. The convenience of being able to play 360 games on their X1 much like people who bought a PS2 could play PS1 games on it. Someone with PS3 games might hold back on buying a PS4 since the PS4 don't do PS3 games.

How do you know this is the biggest contributor? I'm sure word of mouth and social circles are contributors but the biggest?

Speaking of word of mouth, there's positive word of mouth in this very thread with the way Microsoft has been handling their console.

yes sure... just like PS3 sales dropped after removing the Backward compatibility to PS2 and the X1 took almost one year to see its sale increase due to backward compatibility, yes it makes sense.

BC is not the only variable at play here. Correct me if I'm wrong but removing PS2 BC on the PS3 meant the PS3's price could be slashed which at one point in time cost $600.

XB1 BC isnt something new. Its been going on since 2024. You reslly need to stop talking abiut this thing like its some be all end all feature. Its been around since 2014

No, I think it just recently celebrated its one-year anniversary so X1 BC started November 2015:

that's all still not stopped the PS4 from outselling the XB1 on average almost 2:1 globally all that time. And whats funny is that a feature like that is more important at the start of a new gen when there are slim pickings of new 8th gen titles to play. Not now when the 8th gen library has been fleshed out.

No but one must ask how much bigger the gap might have been if not for Microsoft working hard to turn their fortunes around: lowering prices, offering more appealing bundles, being less restrictive with their modding policy, 4K Bluray player support, and I think even outspending Sony at times in marketing their console.

And i swear you sound like an MS PR head. BC is not nearly as important as you try and make it out to be. No matter how much you and MS talk it up. Just look at the sales, hasn't sales over the past 3yrs been proof enough what gamers want and what they feel is important to them?

Not always: just because something sells really well doesn't always mean it's what gamers want: No Man's Sky sold very well especially considering it was made by a tiny team of 15 or so people and yet its legacy is not currently a positive one.

GTA 5 sold incredibly well and yet I find the game to be terrible.

And giving credit is very very different from word of mouth. In this very thread I've aknowledged that MS has done well to try and turn their ship around or at the very least make the most of what they have. But when my friend comes into my house and sees me playing FF15, I'm not going tell him to go and get an XB1 even though the game is also on it. And when he gets his PS4, he will tell his own friends to get a PS4. That's how word of mouth works.

Giving credit is still positive press for XB1 (Microsoft would thank you for it, I'm sure) much like good word of mouth. I repeat once again that positively changing the image of XBox is a gain, not a loss.
