People forget that the PS2 was cheap too along with the Gamecube. PS2 also hit $99, but years later.
The Gamecube ended up selling ~11.29 Million units after it hit the $99 price.
More than half of all PS2 sold were sold after it hit the $149 MSRP (Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price).
The PS2 ended up selling ~82.49 Million units after it hit the $149 price or less, ~50.10 Million units after the $129 price or less, and ~17.80 Million units after the $99 price or less.
The original PS1 also went as low as an official MSRP of $49. The PS1 sold ~12.86 Million units after it hit that price.
More PS1 were sold after it hit $49 than Gamecubes sold after it hit $99.
