It's always hard to say that. The people who built that system have most likely not that much to do with the shortcomings of the rest of the game. Several hundred people worked on it and I don't think having a separate team to work on a separate feature will impact the quality of the game as a whole. It's not even clear if that team even belonged to the core programming team. Might as well just been some freelancers they hired additionally.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
