I'm pretty sure there's racism to some degree everywhere. There is some racism here in Germany, very few in the west, way more in the east. Basically the federal states with the fewest immigrants are the ones with the most racists.
Now, some people aren't that racist. Others are extremely racist. And fundamentalists always are dangerous. Racist fundamentalists should have told you that history lesson as much as religious or every other kind of fundamentalist.
People that are a bit racist might be convinced by one direction or the other.
