4 buttons is easier for most people. You have the thumb in the middle of all four and need to barely move it to get to any button. Another row of buttons would complicate things since you would then have to jump over buttons, increasing the risk of pressing the wrong one, not to mention the comparably long ways.
With the addition of shoulder buttons, it made the need for more buttons obsolete anyway.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
