Thing is, I don't think UB's will last forever. I also don't think they'll remove gyms forever as well. Perhaps they simply realized Hawaii is different and wanted to add something unique to the world and plotline?

I heard that you can actually catch/trade/battle UBs. If that's the case, I'm fearing the worst. Otherwise, I too don't think they'll last forever and gyms are obviously going to return in some future game. The reason these changes are fine is because they're merely changes to this one specific game - the same applies to everything regarding the region itself, the story, and all that stuff.

Edit: that's the reason I don't hate generation 4 to this degree, for example. D/P were games that I absolutely disliked because of the extremely slow gameplay, the confusing region and a story I never cared about - but apart from some really crappy evolutions for older Pokémon, they never did anything terrible for the franchise as a whole (if anything, they added the Physical/Special split which was a very necessary change).

I guess Sun/Moon doesn't catch your appeal for some reason. Not the end of the world.

Even if you have the things you dislike, I don't think your points were big enough to make you not get the game. I'm sure it'll still be an enjoyable experience for you.
