I'm not saying other generations were devoid of it (bad designs and names), I'm just saying this one probably takes the cake. I can always accept change, but there's a difference between a good and interesting new change on something and a COMPLETELY RADICAL CHANGE ON ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING just for the sake of changing things up. Even then, if this was a different franchise, I might have been fine with it - the problem is that this is Pokémon, and as things go with Pokémon, it means that everything that was changed and every addition that was made will stay forever. Also, I'm not really sure how exactly XY was controversial, much less how it underachieved in sales. From what I've seen and know those two statements are simply false. As for the story, Team Skull, nostalgia and all that stuff, I don't really know how to reply to that. Personally, I really liked the story in XY. It was simple, yes, but that doesn't mean it was bad at all - it had memorable characters and moments everywhere. And about the song... I'm sorry, but that is not a great composition at all. I think it's fairly say that it's objectively terrible. It's essentially NOISE all over the place. There's a super corny melody being played on a super corny synth, with some super corny background instruments, a super corny bass that sounds like it came from a Genesis Sonic game, a super corny guitar that sounds like some stupid kid's cartoon opening; and so on. It's WAY too noisy, in your face, and cheesy, to the point where it becomes honestly downright disgusting to listen to. I'm not bashing it just because it's from Sun/Moon - I honestly tried to play the demo and accept for what it was, but that song literally made me want to go close my 3DS and go cry somewhere. It was that bad. I never bash a game just because of its existence. I was very hyped for Sun/Moon when it was first announced, and the only reason I'm criticizing it so much now is because it has been shown, through countless trainers, that Game Freak has no fucking clue what it's doing.
...and about the whole "corny" overusage when I talked about the song... honestly, that is a reflection of everything Pokémon is doing right now. Ever since Ohmori took over as the director in OR/AS, the corny 8-year-old kid ideas have been taking over everywhere - from the pathetic corny story of ORAS, to the ABSURD focus on legendaries and their "bond" with you even when you couldn't give a shit about anything, to how you're always the "chosen one" for everything, to Alola Forms, to Ultra Beasts, to Z-moves, to Ash-Greninja. When I played the demo it didn't feel at all like a true Pokémon game - rather, it felt like the Pokémon Anime turned into a game... and that's far from being a compliment. |
XY was the lowest selling game in the series. It sold 10 million less than BW.
Also, the ash-greninja thing was very popular. They wouldn't put it in if they hated it. People enjoyed the XYZ anime so they decided to bring it in. Not like he's as good as regular greninja. I'd rather see ash-greninja than an uber upgrade to greninja(similar to how charizard got 2 amazing megas).
@bolded about legendaries- many of the games focused on the legendary and bonds with Pokemon. I'm surprised how a fan of Pokemon can somehow not care about that at all. it's focused upon so much throughout the games(especially XY, which is how mega evolutions came)
