I think the Adventure games had that down to a certain extent, but it was focused more on storytelling, differing gameplay styles (Treasure Hunting and Mech Shooting), and trying to fit the mold of cinematic movie-like elements of 3D gaming, rather than bring to the 3rd Dimension, all the things that made Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog. |
"Unfocused" really defines Sega's modern Sonic development career. Shame cause they have had good ideas that they don't let simmer. Adventure 1's Sonic gameplay could have been refined to something great, but instead they did more alternative gameplay styles in the next game.
Sonic Generations is actually pretty excellent, but then they tossed the boost gameplay for Sonic Lost World which had good ideas but screw that noise, time for another redesign...it's just a mess.
