I'd argue that certain religious people not only have a great understanding of the world but a much MORE profound understanding of the world than some people who aren't religious at all.

What's the argument for this?

The argument is that people who aren't spiritual, and who don't believe in anything beyond what their limited scope can comprehend, have a much harder time finding peace in their lives. The cause of all suffering is want. Freeing yourself of want is really the only path to inner happiness. People who aren't spiritual, on the whole, spend their entire lives amassing goods. Better cars, bigger homes, nicer cloths, higher paying jobs, better, more expensive food etc... and this drive is based on want. They want to be happy, and they foolishly and continually think that all of those things will achieve their goal. They can't understand why they're so unhappy.

There's a saying I once heard. Something like "What good is it to gain the world yet forfeit your soul"? I think it's in the Bible, but the point is valid. Whether or not the "soul" is a real thing in a traditional sense or not, anyone who has a deep understanding of these religious/spiritual pilosophies is bound to have a much better grasp of the world than someone who's only interest is making more money.
