In my personal experience and opinion, 50 inches and over is suitable for 4K. Anything less isn't justifiable.

Usually 40" and under is more of a computer display than a TV, but the difference (as it's been since about 2007) more or less boils down to whether the display has a tuner built in and more relevant, the intended use.

Most 4k displays connected to PCs are desktop set ups; either sitting on the desk at normal typing distances, or mounted to a swing mount.
