If your denying reality then you have to believe in something else.
Some people will look at natural events like earthquakes and believe them to be the acts of god to punish sinful people.
Lets face it denial of reality has its uses. It can be a great comfort for those who have lost loved ones or who have been the victim of horrible crimes and believe the perpetrators will be punished in the after-life.
People wouldn't take drugs or escape into video games etc if reality wasn't a bit crap at times.
