INDIEBOX "COLLECTOR'S EDITIONS" ARE COMING TO GAMESTOP IN NOVEMBER

Indiebox has come a long way since we looked at it shortly after its debut in 2014. Back then, it was a handful of guys, many of them volunteers, folding and stuffing boxes by hand, and then hauling them off to the post office to mail out to subscribers. Now, it has a deal with Gamestop to package up hit indie games in Steelbook-encased collectors editions, and sell them in roughly 1200 stores across the US.

Team Fortress? More like Scream Fortr—oh, I see Valve already did that, as it's the name of TF2's annual Halloween event. Joe brought the slightly disappointing news that there would be no all-new giant spookathon this year; instead, the game is getting a few new titbits, while all the old Scream Fortresses will be returning, as with last year.

 

GHOSTS 'N' GOBLINS-LIKE CURSED CASTILLA OUT NOW

Spanish developer Locomalito makes pretty, and pretty authentic, arcade-style action games, and if you've not heard of The Curse of Issyos, Hydorah, or Maldita Castilla, then I know what you're going to be playing for the rest of this weekend. (Have fun!) That last one, a Ghosts 'n' Goblins-esque gothic platformer, has just been enhanced and extended by developer Abylight Studios; you'll find it on Steam here.

 

STAR CITIZEN IS FREE TO PLAY FOR THE REST OF THE MONTH

Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium Games announced its Fall 2016 Free Fly, letting people play its space simulation game for free until October 30.
To access the Fall 2016 Free Fly, you need to create or sign into an account. Once that's done, you'll be able to use the promo code "FALL2016," which will let you download and play Star Citizen. All of this can be done on the promotion's page.

 

MINECRAFT: STORY MODE'S FIRST EPISODE IS NOW FREE

Telltale and Micrsoft have made the first episode of Minecraft: Story Mode available for free, providing that a) you have Windows 10, and b) you download it from Microsoft's store. This comes a month or so after the release of the final (for real) part of Telltale's episodic Minecraft adventure, which was originally going to be in five parts, but eventually ballooned to eight, with the addition of three bonus chapters.

AGE OF DECADENCE SPIN-OFF DUNGEON RATS OUT IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS

Given that post-apocalyptic, Roman Empire-inspired RPG Age of Decadence was in development for over ten years, I did suspect that we'd be waiting a wee while for its subterranean spin-off Dungeon Rats to come out. But no, only a few months after its reveal, Dungeon Rats is set to release. It's a more combat-heavy RPG set in the same world as Decadence, and it'll be out on November 4. GEARS OF WAR 4 BUMPS UP CREDIT AND XP REWARDS IN HORDE MODE

Gears of War 4's Horde mode was tweaked a tad over the weekend, resulting in higher credit and XP earn rates in both public and private matches. The Coalition announced the permanent update on the official Gears of War forums, where adjustments have been in demand since the game's launch.

 

DARK SOULS 3 DLC DUE EARLY FOLLOWING CONSOLE LEAK

Dark Souls 3's first slice of downloadable content, Ashes of Ariandel, was officially due to launch tomorrow, however surfaced prematurely for Xbox season pass owners last week. In response to the leak, Bandai Namco has rescheduled its release—with the expansion now expected to land today via Steam.

 

TOTAL WAR: WARHAMMER TEASES BRILLIANTLY BEARDED GROMBRINDAL

After announcing the Squigs last week, Total War: Warhammer has dropped a new trailer that showcases the elusive Grombrindal.
Otherwise known as the White Dwarf, the "hero from the time of legends" will come packing a series of unique quests—which, like the game's other Legendary Lords, will unlock as he levels up—when he arrives free-of-charge universally at some point in 2017.

 

FROM DARKNESS IS A SINGLE-PLAYER INTERACTIVE DOCUMENTARY ABOUT AFRICAN REFUGEES

Three years in the making, From Darkness is an interactive documentary research project, created by Austrian artist group Gold Extra, that allows players to "encounter the turmoils and conflicts that have plagued eastern Africa [for decades]." I's still in alpha, however its version 0.6 is now available to download for free.
