The way I see it, for this concept to work, the way the Switch was designed was likely the best way to do it. Having the power be divided between the dock and tablet or extra power in the dock I feel wouldn't work as well. I think this was the best way to do it. It just seems just a different way to play games rather than Nintendo 'quitting' the home console business.
