With the Amazon Prime and Gamer's Club discount from Best Buy, day one purchases don't feel quite as risky. It's rare that I absolutely hate a game I buy, and even if I do, I can always trade it in for credit. I just make sure to buy games that I'm very interested in to begin with, and with the huge number of betas these days, it's not too hard to get a decent amount of gameplay out of the big releases before they come out.
