UBISOFT MAINTAINS INDEPENDENCE AS VIVENDI BACKS OFF AT SHAREHOLDERS MEETING
http://www.pcgamer.com/ubisoft-maintains-independence-as-vivendi-backs-off-at-shareholders-meeting/
Yesterday was a good day for Ubisoft's efforts to maintain its independence. Media conglomerate Vivendi, which has been moving toward acquiring a controlling interest in the company, unexpectedly chose not to nominate its own people to fill two openings on the Ubisoft board of directors, allowing Ubi to appoint the independent directors it nominated back in June. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot and his brother Gerard, the CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures, were also re-elected to the board.

RAINBOW SIX SIEGE STARTER EDITION IS BACK [UPDATED]
http://www.pcgamer.com/rainbow-six-siege-starter-edition-is-back-but-only-on-uplay/
The Rainbow Six Siege Starter Edition, which debuted for a limited time in June, has returned. For $15, you get access to the full game and all content, including weapons, maps, game modes, and character progression, without any level cap or other in-game limits.
Update: The Rainbow Six Siege Starter Edition is now available on Steam as well as the Uplay store. It will be available on both platforms until October 13.

WINDOWS 10 UPDATE FIXES DOWNLOAD ISSUES WITH FORZA 3, GEARS 4, AND OTHERS
http://www.pcgamer.com/windows-10-update-fixes-download-issues-with-forza-3-gears-4-and-others/
We noted last week that Forza Horizon 3 had become available for preloading, but that preloading wasn't working for everyone. Preloading is now over—the game came out a couple of days ago, and by the way it's good—and so the update released yesterday may not seem like the timeliest fix ever. The issue apparently impacts a number of other games on the Microsoft store as well, though, including the now-preloadable Gears of War 4, so you should probably grab it anyway.

HERE'S HOW COMBAT WORKS IN DONTNOD'S VAMPYR
http://www.pcgamer.com/heres-how-combat-works-in-dontnods-vampyr/
Dontnod's Vampyr is a game about being a vampire, something you probably gleaned from the old-timey title. You'll play as bloodsucking healthcare professional Doctor Reid, and unlike Max—the star of Dontnod's hit adventure game Life is Strange—he'll spend quite a lot of time beating up folks and sucking blood through a curly straw, in pox-ridden, Post-Edwardian London taaahn. (Max hardly ever does that.)

CAPCOM RELEASES TOOL TO FIX SECURITY RISK IN RECENT STREET FIGHTER V PATCH
http://www.pcgamer.com/capcom-releases-tool-to-fix-security-risk-in-recent-street-fighter-v-patch/
I'm not going to pretend to understand what Capcom did to your PC with its last Street Fighter V patch, but by all accounts it was quite the boo-boo: it introduced a file that people could use to do bad things to your PC, in an excessively aggressive effort to combat piracy. Capcom promised a rollback of the patch, and now they've released a tool that will remove the offending file, if you were unlucky enough to have downloaded the patch in the first place.

RHYTHM ACTION GAME THUMPER OUT NEXT WEEK
http://www.pcgamer.com/rhythm-action-game-thumper-out-next-week/
Phil couldn't have made rhythm action game Thumper sound less appealing to me when he described it (positively) as a "simulated panic attack", but I am curious to see what that means. We already knew that developer Marc Flury's 'rhythm violence' game would be out in October, but as October is finally here, perhaps it's time for a reminder: Thumper releases on October 13. Hey, that's next week! Next Thursday, to be precise. For now, Thumper has gone 'gold', and I mean that literally: its logo has gone gold for this announcement tweet.

MASQUERADA: SONGS AND SHADOWS IS A THING YOU CAN BUY NOW
http://www.pcgamer.com/masquerada-songs-and-shadows-is-a-thing-you-can-buy-now/
We've been following Masquerada: Songs and Shadows for a while now, and now it's finally out (here it is on Humble and GOG); the People's Republic of Steam seems "mostly positive" about the result. Perhaps they're mostly positive about the isometric viewpoint, the real-time-with-pause battle system, the French comic book-esque art or the Venetian-style world; or maybe they're generally happy that FemShep's Jennifer Hale has supplied her voice.

DOOM 2 MOD UNLOVED GETS UNREAL ENGINE 4 REMAKE
http://www.pcgamer.com/doom-2-mod-unloved-gets-a-standalone-remake/
UNLOVED isn't a particularly accurate name, given that this Doom II mod has received plenty of acclaim over the years. It's even less accurate now that it's been lavished with love in the form of a standalone Unreal Engine 4 remake, which was recently added to Steam.

TRADE, EXPLORE AND HOPEFULLY SURVIVE IN DAEDALIC'S CARAVAN
http://www.pcgamer.com/trade-explore-and-hopefully-survive-in-daedalics-caravan/
First, the bad news. This is not a simulation game recreating those terrible family holidays you spent in a tiny static caravan; Daedalic Entertainment's Caravan concerns that other type of caravan, you know, the one made out of camels and horses and carts and people. "In a pre-medieval Oriental setting," the blurb declares, "players will send their caravan from town to town. On their way, they will experience dangerous, mystical adventures, embark on rewarding quests in towns, and fight against dangerous bandits, beasts, ghoulish creatures and djinns".

SERIOUS SAM VR HITTING EARLY ACCESS ON OCTOBER 17
http://www.pcgamer.com/serious-sam-vr-hitting-early-access-on-october-17/
Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope is coming to Steam Early Access on October 17, developer Croteam has announced. They expect it to be in early access for around six months, with the full version boasting more enemies, planets, weapons and bosses, along with a skill tree and other bits and bobs.
