Making a tablet that could hook up to a TV isn't anything special. Tablets can do that, and the technology will imrpove.

To be clear, "hooking up to a TV" is not what is special about NX concept. It actually has separate unit which allows it to increase power draw and increase power (CPU/GPU). In fact, that unit is supposed to have it's own battery so you can take it on the go if you really want to, although the assumption is that it will usually be used plugged in, and handheld-alone will be used on the go.

Execution being important kind of goes without saying, whatever the product is. I just can't understand how this is going to expand their audience at all.
What is the pitch to the casual gamer who doesn't really care about Nintendo games? Now you can not care about them at home and on the go?

I don't think Nintendo can realistically aim to expand their audience significantly beyond what they have. They reached far with Wii and DS hit a sweet spot, but mobile phones will be heavy competition for "casuals". They can still appeal there, but I don't think it can be AS successfull in that market. So they want to make sure they can appeal to their "core" market, and they are unifying mobile/home to do that. Sometime the prudent strategy is not deluding yourself that a past peak is a repeatable goal to aim for.

Eurogamer didn't say anything about the SCD. Nintendo has a patent for it, but that doesn't mean it will actually be used. If it is, and the rumor is otherwise true, then it's definitely better, but still nothing terribly exciting. If Nintendo is going to continue to exist as a hardware developer, they'll need to reach outside their fanbase. Otherwise, they'll just slowly wither away.
