Well then I dont count the N64 all the way through WiiU as competitors, so Nintendo is still very successful. See how that doesnt really work?

Well N64 and Gamecube were definitely meant to compete. Wii and Wii U were meant to be less competitive to current and last gen. They went with the creative route there. They meant to be more unique and not compete in power. Those are my opinions. Yours are welcome too.
