I think you're thinking too linear. Nintendo is no longer competing with those two. Not so much a public announcement that they wouldn't be trying to compete with sony and microsoft, but rather their actions suggest it's better if they ran their own race. Ever since their E3 when they had a direct instead of the old fashion press conference, they've been acting like those two don't even matter. They key to their success is to act on their own with different reasons to buy their console instead of directly competing with other home consoles.
