Ok. So I found out that I lied. The first time I played P4G I stopped right after rescuing Chie like I did last night, not when unleashing Yukiko's persona. So that's where I'm at. Anyway...

What I was reminded of was that the "Guard" option in battle is more useful than most turned-based rpgs I've played. Most "guard/defend" options I've come across only prolongs the defending characters death because he isn't attacking while defending, and he's still taking damage just less of it. In Persona 4 Golden, it actually helps prevent status effects and being knocked down when a hit by an elemental attack that the character is weak against. It's a fair balance of offense and defense planning. Turned-based rpgs would get a better rep over action-based rpgs if similar battle mechanics were employed.
