Yes, that's a good question. There seem to be wide variety of things to which people refer as being "offended". Some people claim to be offended when they hear something they disagree with, other will use the term when somebody is directly insulting them, individually.
Just speaking for myself, I don't think I get offended much. I see plenty of behaviour brought forth by attitudes I find disagreeable and potentially dangerous for society as a whole, but I wouldn't describe the sensation as "offended". Just exasperated. I may even feel some hatred now and then, but that still isn't the same as taking offence.
I suppose for me, taking offence is something I can simply choose not to do, and so where others would be offended, I try and feel something more constructed.
Part of me feels that people who cry about being offended are massive babies who need to understand that being offended doesn't actually... do... anything... to you.
On the other hand, that doesn't mean nobody can be blamed for acting like the kind of arse hole who takes some kind of validation from merely being offensive.
